Swap Used CDs for FREE

Posted on April 21, 2009. Filed under: Bargain Shopping, Entertainment, Uncategorized | Tags: , , , |

SwapaCD is a great way to share CDs with people all over the country!

How it works

  • You have original, playable CDs that you do not want to keep.
  • You post those CDs to your “CD Tower” to offer to other members
  • You add funds to your swapacd money account (this pays the 49-cent transaction fee for each CD you request)
  • After you have posted the first 10 CDs to your CD Tower, you get a “gift” credit from SwapaCD to get you started swapping.  After that, you earn credits by sending out CDs to others.
  • You may order any available CD for 1 credit per disc (multidisc/boxed sets cost 1 credit per disc included)
  • If you want a CD that is not currently available, you can place it on your Wish List and we will notify you by email when it is available for you to order.  You can even have it sent to you automatically when it becomes available, with no email necessary.
  • When a CD is requested from you, we notify you by email, provide the address for you to send it out, and even provide a wrapper!
  • Wrap and mail your CD.
  • When the requestor receives it, you earn 1 credit. Yes, you pay the postage to send out your CDs, but when you request a CD, the sender ships it to you and you pay only the 49-cent transaction fee (plus 1 CD credit per disc)!
  • The CDs you receive from SwapaCD are yours. We hope that you will repost them to share with other members when you have listened to them, but you can certainly keep them, or give them away. Similarly, the CDs you send out to others belong to their new owners.

Flattery will get you freebies in the mail

Posted on March 11, 2009. Filed under: Bargain Shopping, Cooking and Eating, Home & Garden, Pets, Uncategorized | Tags: , , , |

I can attest to the strategy in this news article working and I use it.  I  received multiple $1.00 off coupons for one complimentary email to customer service about  Aidell’s mango-ginger sausages,  free cat food, and Snapple coupons for raving about their diet Cran-Raspberry juice.  Making an organized list of products and 800 phone numbers to be proactive  is a great idea!

Flattery can get you freebies in the mail

Do you like free stuff?

Of course you do.

Well, we have a great tip on how to get free stuff, or at least some coupons.

Here’s the tip from a closet coupon collector:

“People buy things at the grocery store and if you have a constructive comment to the people who make the food or the product, call the toll-free number on the product and compliment them,” our tipster said. “Typically, the companies will give you coupons or a complimentary. You really get some nice coupons in the mail.”

This is brilliant. Especially since the people answering the phones are surely inundated with calls from angry people complaining that, “there was a severed finger in my canned peaches,” or “the wrapper said 1,000 sheets of toilet paper and I only counted 999½.”

So we rummaged through the fridge and the cupboards, wrote down some phone numbers, and made some calls.

Think of something constructive to tell them. For instance, we told the makers of Irish Spring soap to change the product’s name to “Global Spring,” to gain broader ethnic appeal.

A few days later the coupons started showing up in the mailbox. A free pack of Irish Spring soap worth up to $2.99. Thirty cents off Krusteaz pancake mix. A buck off two containers of Hellman’s mayonnaise.

We got a total of $25.94 in coupons. Even better, they’re for products we actually use.

Don’t be a glutton and call every day. But if you followed this tip once a year for 20 years and used all the coupons, you’d save more than $500.

December 18th is Free Shipping Day

Posted on December 16, 2008. Filed under: Bargain Shopping, Uncategorized | Tags: , , , |

Holiday shopping procrastinators now have a day designed especially for them. The inaugural Free Shipping Day (www.freeshippingday.com) – which is set for December 18, 2008, and will be an annual event – is a reward for people who wait until the last minute to cross those final gifts off their list.

On Free Shipping Day participating merchants give free shipping to online shoppers with guaranteed delivery by Christmas Eve.

Retailers have embraced the idea, which was hatched by Luke Knowles, founder of FreeShipping.org (www.freeshipping.org), a one-stop destination for consumers to find online retailers that offer free shipping deals. Participating merchants include brands like Bloomingdale’s, Brookstone, Circuit City, Coldwater Creek, Crate & Barrel, Endless.com, Nordstrom, Sur La Table, Target and Zappos.

Black Friday, which is the frenetic time when consumers descend upon stores the day after Thanksgiving, and Cyber Monday, which commemorates the Monday after Thanksgiving when people return to their offices and surf the Internet for deals, are now a part of American pop culture. Knowles believes it is natural that Free Shipping Day will also become part of our nation’s holiday shopping vocabulary.

“Simply put, Free Shipping Day is the last chance for many people to buy gifts and get them delivered to the intended recipient in a nick of time,” Knowles explained. “We are a nation of procrastinators, so I think that Free Shipping Day will become a popular annual event.”

There is also a need among retailers for an event like Free Shipping Day, Knowles believes.

“Numbers show that online shopping dramatically slows after December 12th. Free Shipping Day will encourage people to continue buying items online later into the month of December,” Knowles said. “Free Shipping Day has the potential to increase pre- Christmas online sales by hundreds of millions of dollars over the next five years.”

Next year’s Free Shipping Day will be selected in January 2009, Knowles says. There is no cost for retailers or shoppers to participate.

“Every year, we will consult with participating retailers to determine the latest possible day in the Christmas shopping season that they can offer free shipping and guarantee delivery by December 24th,” Knowles said. “Free Shipping Day will typically fall somewhere between December 17th and 19th.”

Everything you need is online and can be shipped to your home or office.

FREE military CareKits: The Postal Service has created a special mailing and shipping kit designed specifically for military families sending packages overseas. Each CARE KIT contains two Priority Mail boxes, six Priority Mail Flat-Rate boxes, eight Priority Mail labels, one roll of Priority Mail tape and eight customs forms with envelopes. Buyer beware: Gift cards, retail chain store closings and bankruptcies

Posted on November 20, 2008. Filed under: Bargain Shopping, Personal Finance | Tags: , |

If you tend to give or receive gift cards around the holidays, or have gift cards you have not yet used, you need to be careful.  The cards may not be honored after the holidays if the retail stores are going out of business or have filed for bankruptcy.  Filing for bankruptcy doesn’t necessarily mean that they’ll be stopping operations, but it’s not a good sign.

Newspaper and journal articles have circulated with names of 32 retail chains that are closing some or all of it’s stores. Stores that are planning to close after Christmas are still selling the cards through the holidays even though the cards may be worthless January 1. There is no law preventing them from doing this.  On the contrary, it is referred to as ‘Bankruptcy Planning.

“There are cases already showing up because gift cards will not be honored because the business is no longer in business,” UAB economics professor Mickey Gee states, ” If you buy a gift card, buy it from a company you think will be in business. Give it to the recipient and tell them not to wait to use the gift card.”

He says stores that have filed for bankruptcy aren’t required to honor the cards unless a judge orders them to do so.  In those cases, Gee says there could be stipulations. He cited Sharper Image that is allowed to redeem gift cards after you’ve spent 200 dollars.

Instead of a store specific gift card, you might want to consider giving a VISA or Mastercard gift card which the recipient can use anywhere.  If you do give a store brand gift card, just make sure the store locations near the recipient are not targeted for closing or can be also be used for online purchases if the store has an ecommerce site.

Below is a partial list of stores that you need to be cautious about:

Circuit City (filed Chapter 11 and closing 155 stores)

Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug ,and Catherine’s to close 150 stores nationwide
